Program notes:

I’ve always been intrigued by the connotations that tend to accompany
various typefaces and fonts regardless of the content of the text. For
example, words in all capitals are commonly interpreted as yelling, and
certain typefaces are seen as either casual, formal, playful, or artsy, to
name a few. This piece is an exploration of that phenomenon. In this score,
performers are asked to collectively improvise material solely based on
the appearance of nonsense, unpronounceable texts and not the phonemes
associated with the letters. This piece was commissioned by the PHAZE
Ensemble
and premiered at the University of Redlands on May 30, 2019 in
Redlands, CA.
